Clown Says Paul Gray ‘Probably Would’ve Been The Bassist For The Black Dots’

Modern Drummer recently conducted an interview with Shawn Crahan (Clown#6 of Slipknot, The Black Dots Of Death). Below you can read an excerpt from the interview. You can find the whole thing at Modern Drummer.

Clown:Paul [Gray, Slipknot bassist] was at the show. He loved my art—not just music, though he was always bugging me about side projects and probably would’ve been the bassist for the Black Dots. Then, Paul passed and soon after another one of my best friends—someone who I would always talk to and who would inspire me to keep pushing further—had a stroke. It hit me like an axe to the back of my skull. You’re almost prepared for when your parents die, but I was completely unprepared for this. I was older than both of these guys, and having all that happen was sort of my mid-life moment. I had to really step back and look at myself.

Clown Interviewed By Little Rat Bastard

LittleRatBastard.com recently conducted an interview with Clown. #6 of Slipknot talks about The Black Dots Of Death, the upcoming Slipknot shows, Paul Gray and much more! Below you can read a couple of excerpts from the interview and you can read the whole thing here.

The J: You had mentioned Slipknot and obviously you guys suffered a great loss this past year both personally and as a band, are you in a position to speculate on the future of the band at this point?

Clown - SlipknotClown: We are doing a couple dozen shows this summer in Europe, because there are European festivals and they are very easy for us to obtain because we’ve done them every summer and America isn’t really onto the festival way of life yet. So, it makes more sense to go over there to tribute Paul Gray who dies last year, 2010. As far as that goes, that’s all there is right now. There’s a few of us that would really love to think about bringing the same sort of show over to America for the American kids, but it’s not been talked about, it’s definitely not a certainty. It may not even be a possibility, but I’ll be honest some of us are talking about it, because some of us talk. You know, we don’t all get to talk at the same time or see each other, because we’re all busy. That is something that I wish would happen, but I don’t have full control over making that happen and I can’t guarantee that that will happen. As far as the future goes, you know, it’s one day at a time, whether people like that saying or not. We’re just gonna’ take it one day at a time. We’re gonna’ go over there to Europe and gonna’ get on stage, the eight of us. There will be no new masks. There will be no new coveralls. There will be no new member. There’ll just be an old member that used to be in the band way back in the day, and he’ll be filling in for Paul. He was a really good friend of Paul’s. He was jamming with Paul recently before his death. Then we’re gonna’ do something together, so it feels right. It’ll be the eight of us on stage and we’re just gonna’ do what we do and we’re going to see how we fell and then we’ll let everybody know what’s going on from there. Do I want a future? Yes. Do I want to write another record? Yes. Do I want to go on tour again? Yes. Does that mean we’re going to? I have no idea. I’m not a fortuneteller; I do not know what the future entails. I can’t speak for anybody else but me, nor would I want to. Everyone has their own feelings, their own actions, and reactions and results to what this is all about. We’ll just do the best we can to collectively bring it together and figure it out for ourselves. Which we will, it’ll be one way or the other and that’ll be that. What I will say is that we’ve had a pretty damned good run and we’ve changed the world. And that’s an accomplishment. And if it never were to continue I would be satisfied with the outcome. I would be happy for what we have done, ‘cause I survived it. (laughs) Yeah, I survived it alright.

The J: About The Black Dots of Death as new project, is this something you want to continue beyond this album?

Clown: Well, I’ve got four priorities. The first priority started yesterday and that was to start the puzzles, the seven day puzzles on the website. So priority one has begun and it’s an ongoing process until the 29th, which is the second priority, the album coming out. The third priority is to practice and get things to a point where I even get a couple shows done before I go out with Slipknot. But my biggest priority of 2011 is go out and do these couple dozen shows and start the grieving process for one of my best friends and co-founder of the band Slipknot and give him as much love and respect that I possibly can. Then after that, it’s all Black Dots as much as it can be, touring, playing shows and punchin’ people in the face with art. With concepts, and metaphors, and morals, and parallel themes, you know, that’s what I do. I want to touch on all your senses. I wanna’ touch on everything that you are.
